So as noted there is a new 'kit' for the timing chains/tensionors but that doesn't address WHY the original configuration was susceptible to higher wear rates. I've read and can't find right now that the oil holes become clogged as a secondary outcome of Direct Injection and blow-by. -

FYI ............from the Jag forum: 5.0 V8 chain problems. Survey. Some time around March 2014 JLR changed the timing chains, tensioners and guides on the AJ133. The chains were beefed up from 6.3 mm wide to 8.0 mm wide, the tensioners were improved and most important of all the guides were... -

Thought that the Defender options were locking center and rear diffs, no front. Same as all other models except manual selection? Manual would be a value add for flat towing behind a motorhome? Not sure it is useful on trails. -

I really don't see much difference in off-road capability between the LR3/4, D5 and Defender. They are all based on the same technology (reverse ABS), all use the same algorithms, can all be equipped with rear lockers with the only difference being tire size capability. Not hating on any... -

So we've gone from $50K Defenders to $90K plus in 6 months. I'm guessing the first edition markups are partly the issue but I'm getting this uneasy feeling that the post-covid effects are now being seen. Been looking at travel trailers and the 2021 models are hitting the dealers at 8% to 10%... -

2014+ improvements / weak spots?
2014 intro'd the smaller supercharged engine and 8-speed tranny. You will notice a drop in power and more frequent shifting. Some discussions have attributed the crossover issue to the V6 although I'm not sold on that correlation. -

I'm thinking the D5 was the TD6 Ford sourced diesel while the new Defender gets the 3.0L straight six JLR ingenium diesel. 2020 Defender Drive Impressions.
This ^. I live and tow at altitude so the 2L is not an option. The 3L MHEV is not getting good reviews, is way too expensive upfront and long term cost will also be problematic. For these reasons the new Luxury Defender has no viable power trains options. I'm out till they fix that product option.- mpinco

Keep in mind that product issues always appear worse on forums than they really are. Those with no issues rarely post a comment. The same phenomenon is happening with the coronavirus. For me the new Defender powertrain alternatives are too limited and expensive so I will wait and hope they fix... -

Agreed. One of the primary attractions of Jeep is the ability for the owner to customize their vehicle / build it their way with many options both factory and aftermarket. From hard tops to soft tops to fill-in-the-blank. LR missed that boat. -

LR 4 Retired
In many ways this perspective applies to all newer vehicles where the long term cost can be much higher due to large increases in complexity. Trading in a LR4 for the latest model only defers the issue as the newer model is even more complex and costly to maintain. -
