I’m on the same thought process here, thinking the less invasive approach is the way to go, ie getting the big chunks out by hand and flushing it out a number of times with water then moving onto a 50/50 mix as you mentioned and then once everything is back together and there are blockages... -

Quick update, spent a few hours this weekend getting the heads off to inspect the damage. The biggest pain was the removing the rear crossover pipe and the drives side oxygen sensor. Got the exhaust cam and the rest of the head bolts out on the passenger side, luckily no broken head bolts so far. The last part before lifting the head out is to disconnect the exhaust. Does anyone know if its best to remove the exhaust manifold along with the head and just undo the two flange... -

Got the proper LR head bolt removal tool, thanks again AGLR4! Here’s a picture comparing the T60, LR head bolt tool and the TP60: As you can see the splines on the TP60 are just a bit too thick to work. I used the LR tool and it feels nice and tight compared to the T60 Sent from my iPhone... -

That’s just a long T60 torx socket... it works to loosen the bolts but I don’t think I want to take any chances when putting new head bolts back in using a T60 as there is some play in them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

A couple of updates, removed the lower timing cover, removed the passenger side timing guides/rails one of which had missing the retaining clips and the plastic guide sort of fell apart, removed the passenger chain, variators, intake cam retaining clips and the cam. Got the crankshaft pulley off the crank, I can’t believe the amount of force that I had to exert on busting that nut loose... heyooo that’s what she said. What manual are you using? The one I’m has great technical info but the illustrations suck. I do have the 12.9 crank bolt which believe is the opposite thread type. I’ve read from a few posts that they were unable to achieve the full 200 Nm and 270 degree rotation due to the amount of force... -

Thanks for the pic AGLR4! Also suspecting the quality of the tool might be an issue. I used a scope cam and I believe I saw the void where the key should be popping in and it’s just not going in. I’m thinking of taking the starter off when I’m there to see if I see the notch to lock the flywheel... -

Few more things have been done, removed the auxiliary tensioner, power steering pump, crossover coolant pipe, the timing covers and valve covers. Damn, was that drivers side valve cover was a gigantic pain, one of the rear bolts was virtually unreachable, I had to do a run to HF for some stubby... -

Still have a ton to do, the idea is to get the heads off as the head gasket is blown, inflect the damage and if salvageable, I will re-tap the head bolt threads on the block with the NL300s kit, get the heads machined and go over the valves. I have yet to remove the cross over pipe, disconnect... -

I should note that the drivers side injectors look to have been replaced recently as they have white grease and are generally cleaner in appearance than the passenger ones. I will send both sets out to get cleaned and tested before I plan on putting them in. I will also replace the o-rings and... -
