Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Ah man - the cats out of the bag! Most people that haven't been here think Denver is snowy and cold but we get 300+ sunny days a year and for the most part, the snow stays where it should... in the mountains. The grass has been getting nice and green over the last week.

    LR4 Misc Timing/cooling Parts

I have a number of parts leftover from my LR4 engine rebuild. OEM Lower timing parts (chain, tensioner and guide). 13 tappets of various sizes (3 are new). Aftermarket water pump, newer, I replaced it with an OEM one. New oil cooler tube and used front crossover pipe. Let me know what you're...

2012 LR4 - Need Help With Valve Cover Gasket Bolt / Oil Leak! **White Smoke From Engine Under Hood - Not Overheating**

I had the same issue with my truck, no smoke but a small pool of oil on the ground. To identify it I was able to get under either the car with the bottom guard removed, identify that the back of the cylinder heads were moist. My second confirmation was via the top, reaching the back corner of...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

A couple more updates: The truck is back from the body shop, the final result looks great! Spent some time cleaning up both headlights, these are the basic halogen version, I'd like to eventually upgrade them to the Xenon's of the same year, the face lifted ones look awesome but it doesn't make...

    2010 LR4 - L319 with persistent P0018-00 (28) trouble code

Sounds like timing chain slack or even scarier, skipped timing. Best way to find out is to get both valve covers and timing covers off - check the position of the camshafts with the engine at TDC and check for slack in the timing chain.

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Couple of updates: The LR4 is at the paint shop getting the bumper and quarter panel fixed and painted. Before pic: In the meantime I received the suggested trans pan kit with the removable filter and steel pan from British Atlantic - pleasantly surprised how beefy this thing is. Also received...

Denver, CO: New ZF Lifeguard 8 trans fluid

I have 12 liters of the good stuff to sell, new/sealed 12x 1L bottles. This is the OEM Trans fluid for your 2014+ LR4 I believe among other applications that have the 8 speed ZF transmissions. Bought em for my Audi from FCPEuro a year ago but ended up selling the car and I still have the fluid...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

I'm definitely going to invest in 4x ramps, I've become quite intimate with the underside of this LR4 so far but If I could spare myself from getting a trans fluid bath, it'll be well worth the investment.

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Thanks for the link ryanjl! This is a fantastic thread, I love how everyone had put their 2c in along the way - I read almost all 20 pages of it so far. Coincidentally, RMEuropean is a mile away from me, what a score, they have ZF ATF6 for $15/L, so far the best price ive seen and with local...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Well crap, I thought the ATF fluid used on this transmission is ZF8 where in fact its ZF6, I guess I wont get to use all that ZF8 fluid I have sitting around. I have seen that some people have opted to the separate pan and filter vs the built in unit that ZF sells. I'll have to do some more...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Here's the wire spool with the kink visible, note the chunks of sand that came out along with it. The spool is channeled specifically for the braided wire, I don't think there's a way to put a nylon style rope on here as it's not a winch in a traditional sense. I tried to Mcgiver it by cutting...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Mine looked like it was pressed in 4 spots, I simply drilled through those and wedged a flathead in to crack it open.

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

I opened mine and it was all jammed up with sand and the cable was kinked pretty badly, I don't think I have a choice but to replace it. You're right tho, it's like a $250+ part. This is one of the things I'm considering going aftermarket on since it's just there holding a tire. Tons of...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Oil leak is certainly coming from the valve cover(s), was able to view the leak from under the car following the exhaust pipe up to the heads, the oil also looks like fresh engine oil, not old gear or transmission fluid. I'll probably redo them the next time I do an oil change. This has me...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

You bring up a very valid point, I don't know for certain that it's motor oil vs gear or trans oil, I just had automatically assumed this as it was the last thing I worked on, who's to say there wasn't a previous leak elsewhere. It seems to be dripping even after the car is off and sitting for a...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Update: Found the source of the misfire. Cracked spark plugs are no good for a clean spark! New plug put it and she runs great even with me punching it, surprised by how this things hauls a$$. Also flushed the mainly distilled water out of the cooling system and put in 50/50 mix now that I'm...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Good to know, I checked the pressures last night and they looked to be close enough but I didn't know that this system can be so picky. I'll get the good gauge out and test again.

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Figured out the issue with one of the faults, the charging system fault was as a result of my forgetting to connect a wire on the positive terminal. The TPMS issue cleared but returned, so I will need to chase that one down. There is also a fault with both of the front seat heaters but this is...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Also put 5 gallons of fresh premium in case the old fuel is stale, it has been over a year after all! drumroll................. She fired up on the second try!!! A plume of white smoke billowed out the exhaust, however this cleared up entirely after about 20 min, likely due residual coolant...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Slapped together the rest of the parts the last few days, IE intake with new gaskets, valve covers, injectors coils and fuel lines. Struggled a bit with the water hoses, had an air leak but determined it was an incorrectly connected hose (smaller hose that's supposed to plug in from above the...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Cams and the rest of the timing components are in. All timed up. Actually had to do this twice as the first time I noticed that 3 of my cam followers on the drivers side bank only had 0.21mm of clearance, that's 0.02mm beyond the threshold, not sure it would've made that much of an impact as...

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

Does anyone know what these black tubes are that are inserted near the rear of both heads? One of them came back broken from the machine shop as I had forgotten to take them out, so I'll need to replace it but they don't have part numbers and aren't visible on any parts diagrams that I've seen.

Timing parts purchased are quite different

Confirmed, I knew there was a redesign on both but didn't realize there was angle redesign as well.
