LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

JWA33: It applies, as these are essentially the same retrofits, as I understand that the LR3 transmissions have the same housings as ours.. I'm usually pretty vague on guessing these things as the village idiot on this forum, but as an aerospace engineer by career, I'll elaborate.. Ahem...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

A word of warning/something I noticed: I googled the Allmakes TF2142 and found this: http://www.ribblevalley4x4.com/allmakes/AM_TF2142.html That's a 2 piece kit- with no visible drain plug. Thought I'd mention that to the folks who are preparing to buy, that would be tough to change the...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

No doubt! I think we all threw a lot of info into this that wound up in the video, they elaborated on some stuff but anyone who contributed should be getting some credit (read: discounts)!:D We started it! Mike

    75k Miles - Service

There's a write up here on the diffs and TC, they are easy to do.. And, it's good to spend some time under the vehicle just to see how everything's doing. I did the diffs and TC in about 2.5 hours taking my time.. Mike

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/LRN13754-MFG36.aspx I spent a half an hour with one of their techs on the phone, and he stated that they supply half the Rover Indie shops in Denver with this. He said he was on a mission to figure out if this was the exact same fluid LR sells (LR ships their...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

I put in nearly the exact amount that I took out, and followed the FSM procedure for refilling the transmission.. I had a small leak (about 2 drops a day) from the cooler, but I imagine that it had leaked less than a 1/4 liter.. So it's pretty close. Keep in mind that the pan can't rob very...

    Lower control arm question

You pretty much ju st performed it, with positive results unfortunately. Going over bumps may not trigger it..yet.. Do you have an oil like fluid on the garage floor or on the bushings? Mike

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

MBW- The fluid didn't look too bad, it was still pretty translucent and smelled used, but not burnt. Magnets has some of that slurry on them, and some veeery small shards of metal (probably burrs from manufacturing that broke off and have been on there since mile 2) and the filter was not...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 9. Fill Pan. First, we need to replace the front armor and lower the vehicle. We want the vehicle on a flat surface, and with the suspension at full height, there is plenty of room to get at the fill plug. Remove the fill plug, and replace catch pan under the fill plug. Pump in fluid...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 8. Install Pan. Place the new gasket on the new pan, and place the pan perpendicular to the vehicle (just as the old one came out- we are going to reverse that process). Make sure that the pan is oriented so that if the pan is rotated clockwise, the drain plug is towards the rear of the...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 7. Install New Filter Locate the hole in the transmission that the filter fits into. It's a little ways up there, and towards the front of the truck: Place the new filter into the transmission (as shown below), and press up so that: 1. The tube presses into the hole, and 2. The...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

This is a good time to clean up under the truck.. We have to get the new pan up there the same way we got the old one out, and we don't want to be bumping the new pan and gasket into dirty stuff. Check the threads on the transmission with the M6 tap chaser (I did a few and they were all clean)...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 6. Cut Filter Neck. This is a little tricky, but not very difficult once you understand where to cut. When under the truck, the filter neck is nearly centered about 3 inches from the front of the pan: Insertion: Wrap one end of the hacksaw blade in duct tape to save your hand (I...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 5. Remove pan bolts with the T40 socket and T40 Allen wrench. Here's where positioning yourself properly is critical. For the easy ones, I used the T40 on a drill for speed, the more you get this way the easier it is- remember there are 21 of these..! The front and rear bolts are the...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Step 1. Raise vehicle, secure on jack stands. I only raised the front, and not by very much- the front tires were still on the ground. Maybe 1.5 inches past the high setting on the suspension. Set E-brake if the wheels are still touching. Step 2. Remove front armor. This will help us...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Write-up: Before we get into this, we need to: 1. Establish what tools, parts, and fluids are necessary, and 2. Familiarize ourselves with some components under the truck. Tools: Floor Jack Jack Stands Drain pan Rags that can be discarded Fluid pump IR Thermometer T40 Torx socket T40...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Done!!:D 4 hours, could easily have been done in 3 if I knew what I know now.. The shakedown test-drive afterwards went great, no leaks and it's shifting like greased butter. But, I also look like I've been dipped in greased butter after tilting the transmission pan right over my head when...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

If the mechanatronic sleeve is not leaking, I don't plan on touching it.. The LR3 video stated that the seals had been updated; I'm hoping that update made it into the MY2012s.. As there is no cover over the pan, my first move is going to be dropping the pan after I drain it. Mike

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

I think I can get them, I will do my best during the write-up to show how I accessed the tough ones (ratchet size, which way to approach, etc).. Thank you for confirming you didn't have a cover, I was noticing that a lot in the FSM was copied over from the LR3 model.. Whew.. This means I...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

So I poked my head under the truck today and found this: That's the transmission pan. Isn't there supposed to be a cover over that? The FSM shows one- did all of the LR4s come with these?? I'm semi concerned about it not being there.. It pan job looks like it'll be tight, but do-able...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

I'll jack the engine as a last resort, the instructions that came with the kit seem to display that I can pull the pan out (after the sump tube is cut) with the engine still down of the mounts. This might require dental tools to get at all of those pan bolts, but I'll see if it's manageable...

LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option

Ryanjl: Cool, I'll keep you in the loop.. Question: the 307-452 fill plug tool is just an 8mm hex, correct? I'm trying to iron out any miscellaneous tools I'll need for to the job, so I can start the write-up with a tool list. Mike
