    Rear wheel carrier latch question

I find the Tactical 4x4 one a little fiddly, because it's a U-bolt mating up to a hook. But it works well and is very secure. It's fiddly enough that if I can get stuff into the back via the rear passenger doors, I'll do that instead. But it's a good tradeoff.

Where to tap coolant for a shower heat exchanger?

The problem is that I can't just tap it. I have to insert this in series with it. Looking over this diagram, that section of the upper hose, or at the section that Tees off toward the thermostat, might be a good place. Provided this thing doesn't restrict flow to any appreciable degree.

Where to tap coolant for a shower heat exchanger?

Thanks for helping me think this through. I think I'd be looking for greater flow than that would provide. I'm not even sure those two points represent two sides of flow. I need to basically plumb this exchanger into a section of the cooling system that sees a fair amount of flow, ideally before...

Where to tap coolant for a shower heat exchanger?

I figured there might be someone who has done this already, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Several years ago, I got a used FlatPlate heat exchanger that I'd planned to use as part of a methanol recovery processor when I was making a lot of biodiesel. Then I stopped making biodiesel. Fast...

    Lifted lr4 alignment question

The way the ellipticals work on the LCAs, there is a pair of ridges cut and stamped into the frame side of the mount that the ellipsis on the alignment bolt works against. Just recently replacing one of mine, I found that one of the previous alignment shops had tightened the bolt down on one of...

Just received my notice to put my deposit down on a Grenadier

Good for them! I wish I could afford one.

    Lower control arm replacements

I ended up going with the Lucky 8s with the urethane bushings. Yes, the ride is a little stiffer, but not bad IMO. What I do notice is that it handles much more firmly, responds faster to steering, etc. And the stock bushings were not all that bad...no leaking oil or anything. But I'm pleased...

    Before Top Dead Center

I'm not sure I understand the question, but..."before" would be any number of degrees of rotation before that #1 cylinder hits TDC. Things like injection and ignition have to happen a set, different number of degrees before TDC for the engine to run right. And it even depends on the RPM of the...

    Another new head unit thread

I blame the vast majority of the miscommunication on the fact that I speak much less Mandarin than they speak English. It's part of what you accept when you engage on Aliexpress. I've had good luck on some other things.

When I was looking, i didn’t see any differentiation like that. Where did you see that?

    Another new head unit thread

I took a chance and bought one of the Android-based units from Aliexpress, this one made by HengCheng. It did not come with any installation instructions, but I was sent the attached documents on request. ...and as a result, I am very confused. The language barrier seems also to be confusing to...

    SCV6 responsiveness off idle

Drove a bit this evening in Sport mode, and it definitely acts better. Maybe the throttle mapping in Drive mode is just making it feel anemic to me.

Steal of a deal on an LR4 with issues

It's kind of hard to understand what you're trying to say, but are you saying that you found a Hastings filter that you feel is superior for the LR4? If so, what filter and what engine? I found a 426 suffix that refers to a spin-on filter, but clearly isn't for the LR4. They list a LF661 for our...

    SCV6 responsiveness off idle

I haven't been able to find much about Sport versus Drive mode, really, other than the paddle shifters being enabled in Sport mode. Are there other differences more in line with what you'd expect, such as allowing higher revs, firmer shifts, and so forth? I've also read that the transmission is...

    SCV6 responsiveness off idle

Great question, and I don't have an answer. I haven't really tried sport mode except when I wanted to manually shift gears, especially on steep downhills like coming down from Mt. Hood. On mine, the paddles don't work unless you are in sport mode. But I haven't tried sport mode in any...

    SCV6 responsiveness off idle

I'm wondering what is normal for these engines. I know it takes a little time to get pressure from the supercharger, but I've never driven a SC'd vehicle before. I have driven turbo diesels before, though, with variable vane turbochargers. The LR4 seems to take a loooong time to decide to...

    Nokian Hakka

Went skiing up at Mt. Hood yesterday, with new Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 tires. Roads were snowy on the way up, icy on the way down. I was pretty amazed at how well these tires did in braking tests in all conditions. Didn't really feel the ABS kick in much at all.

    Snow chains recommendations

Last year I bought a set of tire socks. I have to say, they worked surprisingly well, and at least in Oregon qualify as traction devices. You don't want to run them on pavement, but then I'd say the same thing for chains as well.

Thanks. I ordered some. Hope they fit!

Best place to buy wheel arch fasteners

I've had my wheel arches on and off enough that I've broken a few of both the black fasteners near the front as well as the yellow & white snap buttons. Has anyone found a good source for ones that work well but don't cost $1-$2 each plus shipping? I see some on EBay, but I don't know about the...

    Wheels and Tires?

Interesting perspective. My reasoning was a little different: increase clearance and increase approach/departure angles over stock. I'm not sure that 2" or so of lift appreciably changes the overall amount of travel available at each corner. When my tires are stuffed up into the wheel wells, I...

Issues with Terrafirma hidden winch and SCV6

Thanks for this. The issue I had was broader than just that top strap. The bottom hit, too, and I didn't see how I could make it work without modifying both the mount and the vehicle beyond what I was willing to try to "see if I can make it fit." So I'm sending it back unmodified.

Issues with Terrafirma hidden winch and SCV6

Well, I was able to make the mount fit over the CAC with only 1.25” spacers. But even at that, trying to fit the bumper cover over the winch mount I was coming up about 2” shy of making it reach the alignment tabs and screw holes. There’s a little more than an inch of honeycomb plastic that I...

Issues with Terrafirma hidden winch and SCV6

I think Lucky 8 will work with me on this. Terrafirma is telling them it will work, but as I mentioned I'm not convinced it would fit with 1.5" spacers. If it will, I won't be using stilts...I'll make blocks that will put lateral loads back in sheer. So I'm going to try to put the mount on using...

Issues with Terrafirma hidden winch and SCV6

So Lucky 8 is now saying that Terrafirma is telling them the 1" cylindrical spacers in their kit are meant to help with this situation. I'm no engineer, but I see some problems: 1) the spacers are 1" thick, but the CAC protrudes out about 1.5" from the plane of mounting. Even crushing the CAC...
