I guess it depends on your use. I have an 08 LR3 that I bought with 122k miles. I now have 145k miles. I've only paid to replace a ball joint and the power steering rack. I've replaced all of the following myself: ride height sensors, 3 of the 4 airbags, rebuilt the front valve block, tires, wipers, oil several times, turn signal bulb, rear brake bulbs, side steps with rock rails, OEM wheels for defender wheels. I am now working on replacing the front wheel hub assemblies and one of the ball joints as well. These items I have replaced or repaired are all wear and tear items and I'm no mechanic. In my opinion people just like to complain that surprise surprise, they need to do maintenance on their vehicles.
I've used the LR3 for towing my camper and have taken it on multiple 9 hour plus road trips. At this point I do not see a vehicle that can replace this one given everything that it can do. 7 full size seats? I don't think any vehicles besides minivans have full size 3rd row seats. A reliable naturally aspirated V8 engine? Every SUV is a hybrid or turbo powered v6 now unless you go for the new defender and I have what it has without the power of course but it's also $100k less. Air suspension that can change to accommodate your towing needs or rock crawling adventures, captain's view, comfortable seats, perfectly flat fold down seats for an air mattress to camp. I mean it's got it all. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.
As for the LR4, I think the problem with the engine is caused by the lack of frequent oil changes. That timing chain is affected by the oil and if I recall correctly, LR stated in their manual that oil changes could be done at the 15k mark which is insane to me. Change your oil at the 3k mark, is it dark or light? Dark is the answer. It's sad to see many people throw away the LR4 due to the lack of proper oil changes.
