The phone connects to both devices via bluetooth. I don't know the specifics of an iPhone because I don't use one. For Android it is as easy as connecting 2 bluetooth devices. For the mount, you could try a vendor on Etsy, or anyone who has a 3d printer.

Can we discuss the unit? What brand display do you have and does it do everything you need?

I am currently using Carpuride 2023 wide screen 10.2inch model (though layout and screen-size not important). I bought the system to wirelessly connect to my phone for Android Auto. It does that and does it very fast. So far, that's great. The unit also has a very bright crisp display, also great. Here's where the unit has issues.
1. My steering wheel music controls don't work (can't choose next song, but i can control volume).
2. Phone calls are very quiet. I have to crank up the volume to hear the other person. I have tried various settings to try to figure this out, but still can't.
3. The auto day/night mode does not work. I have to manually go to settings, switch from auto to night mode at night. The system always starts with day mode and does not auto switch (here, I'm not talking about auto dimming - that works fine, not great, but fine. Screen gets really bright when stopped at lights). This may be an android auto issue though.
4. Phone gets hot and loses battery when wirelessly connected to this unit (again, may be an android auto issue and not this system issue). This is not a deal breaker, always can charge phone in the car).

Does anybody use a wireless head unit for carplay/android auto that solves for these issues?

That's interesting. I was looking at trying one this week, but I'd want my phone calls to go through the truck's system, with the Carplay for navigation only. Wonder if you can connect that way.

Hey all - Bringing this thread back up. I decided I’m going to have my 2012 LR4 (which I’ve had since new) for the long haul.

Installed CarPlay device recently (about 1.5 - 2 hours) and it is awesome!! Hardest part was the trim on the drivers side.

If you are considering it, do it. It’s a quantum leap from the eyesore nav system.

I found this video the best guide

I used this kit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/386726878237

I also bought a cheap trim removal kit of amazon to help out with the work.

Overall. It just works. 5 stars. Awesome.

The ebay link isn't working for me. Does that unit retain the 4X4 info screen? How does the sound change old vs new?

I just got a Carplay screen of AMZ in the 10.2 size discussed above. It had a $20 off coupon was was $70 delivered so I figured I'd try it. Preliminarily it seems OK. The thing I wanted to understand was the audio. So unfortunately to have the CarPlay audio go through the truck's speakers, I have to switch the audio system to Bluetooth Mode to get audio for reading texts, and that kind of thing. If I'm on Satellite, then obviously there's no way to hear the Map prompts etc. Anyway, it's kinda cool. Time will tell if I use it much.

I wired it into the "cigar lighter" fuse using an add-a-fuse. I hate the junk blue crimp connectors that come with them, so I use nice copper crimp connectors and heat shrink.

The "Cigar Lighter" circuit comes on with your interior lights when you unlock the doors. The Android unit takes some time to boot up so having it come on as soon as the doors unlock instead of waiting for the ignition seems to work well. Downside is it also stays on until your dome lights go off when you shut the truck down. If you want it to come on with the ignition, I'd add the fuse tap to the "cooler box" circuit if equipped. I found that it only comes on when the ignition switch is on. Here it is all connected:

NM. I found the ground trees on lower passenger side column under lower right trim panel in passenger footwell. ✅

…….

I’ve got my screen in and ready to tackle hardwiring, but where behind the glove box did you find a ground to connect to? I’ve got my converter, add a fuse and stuff ready, but when I poked around back there I didn’t see an easy ground anywhere for the negative coming off the factory screen cable.
