DIY Oil Change for LR4

UPDATE: I stopped by the dealer last week to buy 2 gallons of Castrol 5W-20 for my 2010. The told me they no longer carry 5W-20... now, they only stock 0W-20 (spec'd for the SCV6, I believe) and 5W-30 (possibly for older engines).

The parts guys checked with the service techs who reported they fill the 2010-2013 V8 LR4 models with 0W-20 now. I declined to purchase any as I'm not a fan of 0W-xx, water-thin oils created almost exclusively for fuel efficiency reasons.

Anyway, I will be switching to Red Line 5W-20 at my next oil change, arriving in 1kmi:

I plan to change every 5kmi with oil analysis, and will update my oil analysis thread with new results as I get them.

My latest Blackstone Labs report below:

1st sample is from my last Castrol Pro OE 5W-20 fill. Latest sample was from my first year using Mobil1 EP 5W-20.

Note that when and how the samples were taken matters. They recommend grabbing the sample half-way through the drain. I use a vacuum, so I suspect I have varying amounts of stuff that settled.

I had a particularly low mileage year this past year. I expect to be closer to 6-7k miles per year going forward.

Don't recall seeing this brand mentioned before, but I recently came across Ravenol J1A1504 5W-20 which seems to meets the JLR standards. According to their website, they claim "Formal Factory Approval" for the Jaguar/Land Rover STJLR.03.5004 standard. May be a good alternative to the Castrol OE and is currently available directly from Ravenol's website and on Amazon.

So is the STJLR.03.5004 standard a newer one that has superseded the old WSS M2C925-A?

I've seen some reference to it being an up-to-date spec for the AJ133 engine, but nothing formal.

I also found that Liqui Moly Special Tec 5W-20 is billed as "recommended" for the WSS M2C925-A spec. At $30 for a 5 liter jug, the price is pretty good too.

Don't get hung up on the 925 rating. It is simply a long life standard. Use a quality synthetic and swap it every 12 000 kms (8ish k miles). No fuss.

I've never found any formal documentation that clearly states M2C925-A superceding to anything else. Lots of speculation, no proof.

A lot of mfr's show their oil as "recommended for" a particular application, which is not the same as a true OEM/manufacter approval. My personal choice (Red Line) uses the term "Suitable replacement for" Ford WSS-M2C925-A. Red Line is a Group IV/V oil but not cheap at $48/gallon (free shipping at Summit Racing or Jegs, on orders over $99).

Note that any oil priced around $30 for 5 liters will be a Group III base stock; not a big deal if you are changing at ~5kmi intervals, but I wouldn't recommend it for extended drains or the FSM spec of 15kmi. I like Motul products too, and do use some of their stuff.
