I prefer the 2013 shifter, but I won't cry a river if I get the knob. I just hope they still offer the black pkg and some kind o flight-ish gray like Orkney. It took me awhile to settle on that color!

Black Lacquer trim looks soooo good on the LR4  My wife also got hooked on her Orkney Grey 2011 and wanted the same color for her 2013. The dealer said we would get Grey, just not Orkney Grey, but rather Corris Grey which is a little bit darker.

Ryano just picked up a Corris Grey:

Oh yes, the new RRS doesn't have that shifter - I forgot about that.

I totally agree, it looks pretty sharp in the Jaguar, but not in a Land Rover.
I absolutely HATE the new BMW-esque shifter in the upcoming '14 RRS. It's so damn dainty and flimsy looking... no leather boot either. Plastic too. Looks silly in a Land Rover - looks like it's been lifted from a Startrek episode.

Funny how other "me too" car makers who have already gone through the whole BMW-looking shifter thing are now shifting (no pun intended) back to more traditional looking and sporty shifters with leather boots because of poor consumer feedback. And poor LR is just getting started. Shakes head.

This was posted this evening:

Seems like we are getting closer to actually revealing some facts about the LR4/Discovery 4. I am starting to believe the 2014 is going to have the SC V6.

Nice find, David. Sad to see the NA V8 truly phased out. I'm not in love with the choice LR made... but I really believe they didn't have a choice and consumers now need to face the reality that more efficient and smaller engine plants are going to be common place in all automobiles. Remember the 70s? I saw a Bronco II today, and thought to myself, this is a byproduct of the gas crisis, and what if the Internet existed then, and what people said about the changes.

Hey Count,

I don't quite remember the 70s, as I wasn't quite born yet - LOL! :)

In many ways, I can see Land Rover's logic in going with the SC V6 to save MPGs, but I have to wonder if it will really be that much of a savings without shedding some of the current weight (like the new RR and RRS)?

I almost don't think that most Land Rover buyers are going to care much about the engine, but the few MPG increase will make them happy. The updated headlights, mirrors, rotary knob, etc. all will attract buyers who like the luxury and prestige and don't care much about the capability and heritage.

All I know is that I am happy I got a 2013.

I was born in 1971... I didn't live the 70s... from the perspective of an adult, but those were very tough times for the country. The fuel crisis affected everyone, especially the car industry... from Mercedes to Ford... the awful cars produced are a true testaments of the side effect... some of the worst cars made in history were made during the 70s. The Bronco II is a fine example - although it was produced in the early 80s.

Nonetheless, I am happy for you as well that you ordered and grabbed the last of the V8s. I'm also happy that I pulled the trigger on my RRS. Rather than waiting for the new model. I was pretty damned close to pulling the trigger on the '14. But my gut said no... and I went with intuition.

It's unfortunate that LR is pushed to make these very difficult decisions, AND it'll effect their sales, without a doubt. The problem is that JRL (especially LR) has such a poor reputation in the marketplace that your joe/mass consumer will never buy into the product to begin with, so they're mostly left with loyalty customers, who eventually will migrate to other brands who continue to offer more upmarket features, rather than give in to a downmarket product, with a very high upmarket price. The change/shock is too sudden and poorly planned. Whereas Merc and others, have a true roadmap for the downsizing, easing the consumer into place organically.

It'll be interesting to see the sales data after the New Year. It is somewhat puzzling, that the '14 FFRR with the SC V6 has no reviews whatsoever. It is in the US market... but not a peep. Not one real review on the new powerplant. Is this purposeful? Who knows.

All I know is that I'm pretty old-school and it'll take a while to accept the changes. It's not just LR... everyone else is also having to downgrade the powerplants, but it's done more strategically... it'll be interesting how things play out. If the internet existed in the 70s, I wonder what would have been recorded, what people thought, how shocking was it? Did people just adapt? Who knows. Only time will tell.

Land Rover is trying to make its way from the niche market into mainstream and is in fact losing its identity and heritage in process.

That puts the company into the same luxury segment with the germans and the japanese. Given the LR's less than stellar reliability record, it is going to be an uphill battle
