Disco Transfer Case Gear Noise

I just acquired a 94 Discovery with 108,000 miles. I notice that there is a fair amount of gear "whine" from the transfer case. The previous owner (my brother) indicates that the dealer said this is normal for Discos with the gear driven transfer case. My brother says it's been making the noise since new. Can anyone confirm that the gear whine is normal, and if so, is there a particular gear oil I could use to minimize the noise?

Yes it can be normal... but I would also check the gear oil level in the xfer box. I run a 90 weight synthetic gear oil.... works great.
