Let's try to get the facts down on tensioner issues

I don't do Facebook (any type). The signal-to-noise ratio was never good and over the years I hear it has only gotten worse.

Big LR4 issue, cut losses and sell vs fix?

No Chevron near me (or at all in New England, as far as I've seen). Not a member of Costco either, although I've heard it's good fuel.

Big LR4 issue, cut losses and sell vs fix?

Yup Shell V-Power 93 here. On trips I will use Shell or Mobil premium. If I must I will use Sunoco. Yes, I am a fuel snob on all my cars.

Agreed. If that doesn't work, visegrip and let rotate until it rests on something to prevent rotation.

Ha! That would be great to see!

Big LR4 issue, cut losses and sell vs fix?

I agree with 2nd opinion/quote. It will be expensive no doubt, but I am not sure that all sounds like $6.7k-expensive.

    LR4 vs Defender

And at 43k miles, I thought I had the lowest mileage LR4 in the forum. As I've mentioned many times, we also have plans to keep this thing as far as I can see into the future.

    Buying a used high mileage 2010 LR4

To be honest, I'm not familiar with the used LR4 market.I happen to have a late V8 with low miles that I ordered myself, so I never check the early high mileage market. That said, all the potential concerns of things that could happen aside, yes it is higher mileage, but it seems to have a lot...

    Buying a used high mileage 2010 LR4

You mention the stack of receipts and your research (which is great), but other than LCA's, I did not see you mention evidence of any of the important things to look for: 1) Frequent oil changes 2) Crossover pipe(s) 3) Timing chain guide work 4) Transmission fluid change 5) A working e-brake...

Thanks, I misread that. That's awesome that it was at the buzzer and done under warranty!

What was your oil change interval?

Let's try to get the facts down on tensioner issues

I've never heard of this. Timing chains (unlike timing belts that need replacement every 60-80k miles) have traditionally been lifetime parts. I believe that is the case for the LR4 as well. I don't recall a replacement interval for the chain and I'd think it would have come up in one of the...

    Questions about new purchase

From what you describe, this car seems like a great find. Decent maintenance records from dealer, no noises, etc. That said, it is 8-9 years old and with 100k miles. Stuff will come up. What are your expectations? If I were looking at that LR4 as a car I'll put 15k+ miles per year and the...

Can a 2013 LR4 be upgraded to Heavy Duty?

I believe the question has been asked and the answer has been that is it cost-prohibitive and one would be better off going aftermarket. But I personally have no knowledge of the challenges in doing so.

    Hitch - cracked

Exactly. As a mechanical engineer who designed lots of stressed machinery components I find investigating mechanical failures pretty fascinating.

    Hitch - cracked

Good call. I hardly ever tow, so that loading mode didn't occur to me, but that is about the only scenario that would explain it.

    Hitch - cracked

That is an odd failure mode. Hard to imagine that area being particularly stressed. Was this new when you bought it?

Ouch. The thing is, you have to imagine that chain was making a racket and it was ignored. Maybe I am being hopeful but the warning signs some people are oblivious to never stop amazing me.

Let's try to get the facts down on tensioner issues

That is correct. There is a video showing the old and new. My understanding was that that was the "2013" change.

Let's try to get the facts down on tensioner issues

I suppose I'll add my own data but it has too low a mileage to matter, I think. - July 2013 production. Bought new. Now ~43k miles - Oil changes yearly or at most every 7.5k miles with OEM Castrol during 4-years of warranty and Mobil1 EP 5W-20 since. - No engine issues at all.

Let's try to get the facts down on tensioner issues

We've discussed tensioner-related issues a lot on this board over the years. I think it would be helpful to summarize what we know. I'll start with a poor attempt and hopefully we can get to a consensus. 1) We all agree with the fact that the oil change interval should be reduced from the...

LR4 suddenly won't start/crank. Even with fully charged battery and/or jump

Could this be a way to skirt the need to "program" a new battery? Has anyone installed a new battery without any sort of programming and had no trouble at all?

    Your experience about LR4 V8 5.0

Luckily my BMW has a non-resetting defeat button. It's also a stick, so I could just keep the clutch in as well.
