Living up to its unreliable history

Either you're blindly loyal or something is wrong with your old man's Yukon Denali. These do ride great, but to pretend they're perfect and float on a cloud above everything else is just not being impartial. They ride great. They're very nice. That's why I have two. 50,000 mile control arm...

Living up to its unreliable history

Okay, I'll add to it - lots of vehicles are both comfortable and heavy and manage to not run through control arm bushings every 50-60k miles. That part is either under-engineered or poorly made, plain and simple. I'm not crapping on the vehicle, I love them. I wouldn't have two if that weren't...

Living up to its unreliable history

So far so good with both of ours (LR4 and RRS,) with the exception of the one major gripe I have with these vehicles - those stupid ass control arm bushings. There is no reason a vehicle should need new control arm bushings so early. Everyone here justifies it to themselves as being due to...

    Cool find, thanks for sharing.

    Programming a used remote for a 2014 LR4

I have used my IIDTool to program a second remote, and it has tons of other neat things you can do to your vehicle along with it. In fact the primary reason I bought it was because it cost the same as what the dealer wanted to charge to program a second key at the time.

Maxing Out Off-Road Ability on 19" Wheels (yep, tires again)

Thanks for circling back with the update in spite of the not-so-warm welcome you got at the beginning of the thread, for whatever reason. Looks great, and glad you got to take it out with some other LRs.

Signs that LCAs need to be replaced

You can replace the fluid-filled bushings with solid poly bushings (atlantic british, lucky8 both have them) and replace the ball joints instead of replacing the whole arm, but the jury's out on whether or not that will actually last any longer. It will definitely make the ride more firm. Down...

weird window and side mirror issues

Battery voltage gets low enough these dumb things forget some stuff. Sometimes you'll see your date format go back to day first like Europeans write it, or the clock will go to midnight or back to 24hr format, or the auto up/down windows stop working, etc. Have you tried to do the manual...

    IID tool and TPMS

I don't think so. I don't recall such a sub menu on my LR4 or the wife's RRS, at least.

    What's with JLR?/Defender rant

One thing I really am impressed with is how much shit I can get in the LR4. I've fit very large pieces of furniture in it, we've taken it on weekend trips with other couples with the cargo area piled full of suitcases and golf clubs, etc. Surprising amount of room back there. I also very much...

    What's with JLR?/Defender rant

I kind of like it with the FX4 nose, but definitely not the others I've seen pics of. Midsize trucks have all of the drawbacks of a 1/2-ton with none of the benefits, though. My most recent vehicles were a Ram 1500, then a Tacoma for five years, then a KR F150 for five years, then the LR4. The...

    What's with JLR?/Defender rant

Have you seen JLR sales numbers from the past few years? Of course they're doing new things instead of passification of previous owners and heritage. Us previous owners aren't paying the bills - they're so far in the hole they have no choice but to try things that will dump us in hopes that...

    Radiator leak

As someone who worked on vehicles to pay his way through college, I agree with this gentlemen wholeheartedly. Never saw a stop-leak actually stop a leak, but I saw it clog up lots of expensive and hard to replace shit.

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

They'll only go down with the ignition off. But if you had the ignition/accessories on with just the engine off it may have gone up. If everything is off you'll just hear the solenoids clicking to let other corners down to match. What's awesome is how fast it adjusts for load or tongue weight...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

All that useful space is killing mine :( There's so much more utility than my wife's RRS or our best couple-friend's cars, so it seems every time we go anywhere it's in my LR4. The miles are piling on fast, which makes this situation we find ourselves in (no suitable replacement) hit even harder...

    That's a seriously sad statement.

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

Oh. Well shit, lol. I was referring to the beast. Although to be honest I thought they all had portals - my memory is just shit I guess. It is definitely fun. It either falls over or breaks every time we go out, but it's fun right up until that point. I'm currently fixing this issue for the...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

That's fair - we can easily disagree. Numbers don't tell the full story, no matter how detailed - so it is just like you say, bench wheeling. Neither of us really know, but you do make a strong case. For what it's worth when I talk about wheeling I'm talking about the stuff most folks watch on...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

I don't think the LR3/LR4 would stand a chance off-road against a G. Regarding front locker - probably never need one in something as nice/expensive as a LR3/LR4 or modern US G, but in real wheeling it's even more important than the rear. The rear has weight shifted to it when climbing the rocks...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

I finally saw one in the flesh over the weekend. Holy shit, I thought it was bad in pictures. It is painfully ugly - I wouldn't even vaguely entertain the idea of buying one, no matter how many cool features the interior may have. I guess my next ride will either be a RRS or I'll be moving back...

    Coolant leak from Transmission?

For what it's worth, the ZF transmission fluid that should be in there isn't red like most ATF you may be used to. It's kind of a light brown/burnt orange - more brown than orange, though. It doesn't smell at all like traditional ATF either - kind of smells like toasted almonds that are a little...

    Saying goodbye to an albatross

That sucks. The wife's RRS and my LR4 have proven very reliable, but stories like yours aren't terribly uncommon. I knew that going in and have been pleasantly surprised - sorry you got the opposite.

    Has anyone had headgasket done?

Any machine shop that can resurface the head can probably magnaflux it to check for cracks, too. Hopefully no cracks, I'll bet these heads are expensive as all hell.
