Kings Cross Automotive in Vancouver, WA?

Anyone here worked with this independent mechanic in the Portland Metro area? Good mechanics? Avoid them? Someone better to work with north of the river?

    Dieseling engine noise

I think of dieseling as a motor that continues to run after you’ve shut it off. I assume you’re talking about knocking or pinging, aka detonation? If it actually is doing that, then yes, it can cause damage. But these motors seem to be pretty good at sensing detonation and retarding the timing...

Anyone end up buying their Grenadier order

Totally agree! You’ve been a real help here to a lot of people. Congrats on the sale!

5 codes no crank no start 2011 LR4

Just to be clear, if you’re using a voltmeter, you should see the same voltage on each end of that fuse relative to ground. If you see 12V on the battery side and less than that on the other side, your fuse may have blown.

    Cylinder 5 Misfire

It's impossible to tell (for me, anyway) how deep those vertical lines are. But the fact that they're there at all is odd to me, given that I can see hatchmarks from the machining still. So something caused that scoring via piston movement. Seafoam is very thin, and should basically drain into...

    Cylinder 5 Misfire

To @powershift ‘s point, are you aware of whether or not the engine has been overheated substantially? For the Seafoam experiment, yes, just the regular Seafoam spray ought to work. Spray into the cylinder, leave it for a bit, spray again…I’d do 3-4 treatments of it if you have time, letting it...

    Cylinder 5 Misfire

Curious what you mean by "check the head gasket" here? I've never pulled a cylinder head but what it destroys the head gasket to the point where you're lucky if you can detect forensics that point to a head gasket as the failure point. To the OP, I'm guessing here so take it with a shaker of...

My 2012 LR4 is not starting anymore, help please

Keep in mind that replacing the starter also cleans the connections, typically. So you might not know if the old starter was actually OK at only 57,000 miles. That said, as I asked earlier, is the OP using ECO mode, which cycles the starter a lot? That's gotta have an impact.

LR4 - Coolant Under Pressure When Cold

How quickly did the cylinders leak down? And did you spray any oil into them?

LR4 - Coolant Under Pressure When Cold

I'm kind of curious what you mean by "just" a cracked head? I would prefer the blown head gasket, personally. ;) My limited experience with both indicates that it's very hard to tell the difference between the two until you get the head off the block. Even then, you only can eliminate one (the...

My 2012 LR4 is not starting anymore, help please

Cursory read through the thread, but I didn’t see any description of what you mean when you say “won’t start.” Does it crank but not turn over? Does it click but not crank? I’m assuming the latter, given that a “mechanic” is pointing to the starter. You also don’t mention whether you are using...

    2016 LR4 Dead... need help!

Glad to hear you got it running again. I would still clean all battery and charging-related contacts, including grounds. It may be that the system wasn't charging right because of it, and you'll have a repeat before long.

    2016 LR4 Dead... need help!

Really sorry to hear about your trouble! I wish I had a magic bullet for you. I would start with disconnecting and reconnecting the battery after a few minutes. Take the opportunity to clean the battery terminals and cables while it's disconnected. If you can borrow a known good battery, so much...

LR4 - Coolant Under Pressure When Cold

I'd say if you're willing, test the coolant for exposure to combustion gasses first. But based on what you've said, I suspect you'll get null or marginal results from that test. Leaks like that are pretty consistent once they start. If you haven't had a repeat episode, it may have just been...

LR4 - Coolant Under Pressure When Cold

Definitely could be a head gasket, or cracked head. Hard to say. Burnt coolant usually has a pretty distinctive smell...kind of sweet...and it doesn't dissipate very quickly. "White vapor that dissipates pretty quickly" could just be that it was really humid that morning, and the water vapor...

2015 Land Rover LR4 HSE- Thinking about buying, does the engine sound right? https://youtu.be/wqjUb-qWbxE

I can't tell, TBH. Videos rarely get "the point" across to me, because so much of the information is in the volume of the noise, rather than the character. By the time the phone has done it's audio compression, and YouTube has done some more, I can't tell what's happening unless there is...

    Engine disassembly after going poof

Isn't that diesel V6 pretty notorious? Not legal in the U.S. anyway...otherwise I might still be brewing biodiesel.

Different oil level readings with hood open

Sorry, I'm dense. I am still not understanding what happened here, @jastutte . On my vehicle, if I pop the hood after the engine hasn't run for >15 minutes, when I get to the part of the service menu that would ordinarily show the oil level it DOES show the oil level...not the "not available"...

Different oil level readings with hood open

Hmmm.... With it not running for at least an hour, you shouldn't have needed the "bypass method" at all, right? IOW, at no point should you have run into a situation where the oil level wasn't available in that case, no need to hit the Cancel button twice. So I'm not not sure what you did...

Different oil level readings with hood open

I don't know who the "everyone else" is that you're referring to. I guess the best I can do is to have you take the time interval variable out of the experiment. Let the vehicle sit for half an hour after it was run. Then try both methods of checking the oil level. I bet they agree at that...

Different oil level readings with hood open

That's the source of your difference, if the *14 photo was taken shortly after engine shutoff.

Different oil level readings with hood open

How long was the interval between the photo ending in 14 and the one ending in 16? If you use the "hood open/cancel twice" trick soon after stopping the engine, you can actually watch the oil level indicator rise.

Different oil level readings with hood open

The most accurate reading in cars with dipsticks* is at least 5 minutes after the engine is stopped. I would think this would also be the case here. *wish I had one in this thing...

Different oil level readings with hood open

Ordinarily “the guys in the fb group” and “credibility” aren’t closely aligned in my mind. Maybe they’re right, but I can’t think of any good reason why there would be two different scales? However, I could see how the time difference between measurements might cause later measurements to be...

    2014 LR4 SCV6 Low Revs at idle

First step I would take would be to invest in a GAP IID tool to read the codes and investigate. Without that data, anyone is guessing.
