New member here! I've been looking for my first car for a while and have saved up enough for a down payment for a 2007-08 Range Rover Sport HSE with around 90k miles. I fell in love with the Range Rover as soon as I sat in it. The only problem is I don't want to fall for a car that is going to cost me tons of money in repairs or maintenance otherwise I'm gonna have to get rid of it! Now I was wanting to know if there are any RRS HSE owners out there that can tell me how often you have to get tires, brakes and how much regular maintenance is on the car? Also, do the '07-'08 models really live up to that horrible reliability name that RR gets? What is everything that you like/dislike about the car? If I get one that's well maintained will I be okay and never be in the repair shop? Thank you in advance!

I can't give you first hand experience on an 2007-08 sport, but my mother has an 06 with about 50k miles and she's done two transfer cases, rear air bags, front and rear diffs, along with a myriad of other issues.

I always try and remind people that this was an $80k vehicle new, with lots of technology and systems. Even if you're buying one for $15k, it comes with an $80k mechanical structure behind the scenes.

Dealers are the worst places to get these serviced out of warranty, i'd want to know i had a good independent rover specialist nearby to use in lieu of going to a dealer.

The other big item to look at are the service records. For instance, my mother's RRS HSE is probably a good catch as she's had a 6 year/100,000 extended warranty and always used the dealer for service. The other option is wrenching yourself. If you have any mechanical ability, sites like this offer lots of support for those who aren't afraid to get greasy and busted knuckles. There are some items (like the computers) that have less friendly interfaces and do require specialists.

Tire wear will depend on the tires you run, conditions you live in and how well you maintain the alignment. I'd estimate you can get 30,000 out of a set of all seasons in the right conditions, but i know "mom" had to put on two sets in 15k miles as the rear diff was going and she didn't know it.

These are tremendous vehicles with great ride, spectacular off-road abilities and great looks, but they can be dauntingly expensive to maintain if not well cared for.

Thank you for the feedback! The '07-'08s I'm looking at are about $5k under my budget which is a huge plus. The thing is I'm wondering if after repairs, maintenance and tires I'll lose all that extra money. Just my luck the car that's my favorite is the least reliable. Then again I've heard of people who have had very few problems with their Range Rovers. My friend has an '07 HSE with over 100k miles and it runs great. It's either this or an Infiniti FX! It would be the RR in a heartbeat if they weren't so expensive to upkeep, so I'll have to think about it.

My wife and I own a 1999 110 defender SW and also have a 2007 RR Sport TDV6 HSE that has now done 137,000 km and in that time it has only had 2 rear tyres (due to tread separation) and timing belt (normal replacement time), waterpump and thermostat leaking (although the pump and thermostat weren't actually faulty, dealer error).
I would happily & confidently jump in and drive it anywhere in Australia tomorrow even though I love the defender for outback trips
